The Northwest mountainous region offers, perhaps, the most spectacular scenery anywhere in Vietnam. Day 1: Ha Noi
Begin the tour with a full day city tour. In the evening, sit back and enjoy a water puppet show – a performing art unique to Vietnam.

Day 2: Ha Noi – Mai Chau (40km cycling)
After breakfast, take a support vehicle and drive out of Hanoi heading west for Luong Son town. From here, set off on bikes and ride along the scenic road for about 25 km to Hoa Binh town. After lunch, continue to Mai Chau. Overnight at Mai Chau Lodge.

Day 3: Mai Chau (35km cycling)
Today is a more challenging day climbing hills and descending into valleys. The ride will take you through several traditional and friendly hill tribes before making the loop back to Mai Chau valley. Overnight at Mai Chau Lodge.

Day 4: Mai Chau – Son La (60km – 100km cycling)
Son La is notable for the colorful ethnic minorities, the terraced rice fields, the tea plantations and delicious mangoes. Arrive in Son La mid-afternoon and enjoy some free time to discover the town.

Day 5: Son La – Dien Bien Phu (60km – 100km cycling)
The scenery from Son La and Dien Bien Phu is extremely breathtaking. The early start this morning gives the opportunity to visit one or two colorful markets. After checking into the hotel, you will enjoy a tour of historic Dien Bien Phu.

Day 6: Dien Bien Phu – Lai Chau (Tam Duong; 60km – 100km cycling)
Today’s part cycling is simply a great experience. The scenery is nothing short of breathtaking. Arrive in Tam Duong in the late afternoon.

Day 7: Lai Chau (Tam Duong) – Sapa (50km – 70km cycling)
This morning, visit a colorful hill tribe market before making the ride up to Sapa. The ride today is more challenging cycling 26 km uphill to Tram Ton pass. Reach Sapa by mid afternoon and spend the remainder of the day strolling around town. (NB: support vehicles are available for those that wish not to ride)

Day 8: Sapa/Trek (6 hours trek)
This morning, drive 7 km before commencing downhill walk to visit Lao Chai, the village of the Black Hmong people. Continue to walk 2 hours to visit the Zay minority at Ta Van. Then take a jeep transfer into the heart of the hill tribe region and continue trekking downhill to Thanh Phu, to spend the night in a stilt house of the Tay people.

Day 9: Sapa/Trek (7 hours trek)
After breakfast, trek to the village of the Xa Pho tribe, the smallest ethnic group in Sapa who have very little contact with modern Vietnam. Continue to trek up to Nam Toong and visit the Nam Ken Village of Red Zao. Overnight in a home stay.

Day 10: Sapa/Overnight train to Hanoi (2 hours trek)
After breakfast there will be a 2 hour uphill trek to Su Pan before a jeep transfer to Sapa town. Afternoon is free in town. Catch the overnight sleeper train to Hanoi.

Day 11: Hanoi – Halong Bay
Arriving Hanoi early in the morning, our bus will pick us up and transfer directly to Halong bay. Two day cruising Halong Bay will give us the chance to relax and take in the stunning scenery of this World Heritage Site. Swimming, sunbathing, cave exploring are activities available during the trip.

Day 12: Halong Bay
Rising in the morning, we have time for an early morning dip followed by breakfast. This morning we’ll continue to cruise around the bay to find more secluded areas to either swim or kayak in. As the sun sets, relax in the dining room or on the open air deck and reflect on the days activities, while absorbing the magnificent scenery.

Day 13: Ha Long Bay – Hanoi
Whilst having breakfast we enjoy 2-hour cruise heading back to Halong city where our vehicle is waiting to take us back to Hanoi. Free afternoon until we regroup to enjoy the farewell dinner in one of Hanoi’s superb restaurants.

Four-day adventure tour exploring dramatic countryside around Cao Bang

Cao Bang is located in Vietnam’s rugged north near the Chinese border and is home to different ethnic minorities including the Tay, Nung, Dao and H’mong. This exciting new trek will bring you into contact with several of these groups. Spend this four-day adventure tour exploring the dramatic countryside in and around Cao Bang and enjoy the hospitality of the Tay and Red Dao ethnic groups.

Day 1: Hanoi – Ba Be Lake
Depart Hanoi early in the morning and head north towards Ba Be Lake. Along the way stop at the Thai Nguyen Ethnology Museum before continuing on to Ba Be.

Day 2: Ba Be Lake
After breakfast you will be driven to the jetty to board your private boat for a cruise on the lake and the chance to visit some caves. Tonight will be spent in Pac Ngoi village, populated by the Tay minority group.

Day 3: Ba Be – Cao Bang
This morning take to the road again for the 90km drive to Cao Bang. The H’mong, Dao, Tho and Nung ethnic minority people all live in the surrounding area. After lunch, you will visit Pac Bo Cave, the hideout used by Ho Chi Minh during the war. In the late afternoon, head back to Cao Bang to spend the night.

Day 4: La Village (Trek 15 km)
Today you will be driven to the Ta Lung border with China for lunch. Later you will begin trekking with a 15km walk to the Tay village of La where you will stay overnight in a homestay.

Day 5: Na Mieng Village (Trek 16 km)
Today trek from La village to Na Mieng village, another Tay community which is nestled in a beautiful valley amidst a dramatic mountain range. Enjoy a peaceful night as guests of the Tay in Na Mieng.

Day 6: Pac Khoang Village (Trek 15 km)
Enjoy another day’s trekking as you travel through several minority hamlets. Stop for lunch at the village of Dong Khe before venturing on to the Red Dao settlement of Pac Khoang.

Day 7: Na Pang village (Trek 17 km)
A final full day of trekking will take you to the Tay village of Na Pang, which is a 17km hike away. Stay overnight in the village and enjoy the hospitality of the Tay.

Day 8: Cao Bang – Hanoi (Trek 12 km)
Leave your hosts this morning and trek for a further 12kms until you reach the village of That Khe. After lunch in the village you will meet up with your vehicle, which will transport you back to Hanoi.

This Itinerary:

Day 1: Hanoi

Receive by your guide on arrival at Hanoi’s airport. Transfer to your hotel by road. Pre-trip meeting with your guide. Free to explore the city. Be treated to the famous Water Puppet show. Welcome dinner in a restaurant. Overnight in your hotel. (Dinner)

Day 2: Hanoi city tour

After breakfast, visit Ho Chi Minh museum, the president palace and Temple of Literature. Lunch in a restaurant. After lunch, enjoy a cyclo ride around Hanoi Old Quarters. Dinner in a restaurant in Ha Noi. Overnight in hotel. (Breakfast)

Day 3: Hanoi – Mai Chau

Leave Hanoi by road to Mai Chau. Along the way, stop by the villages of Muong, Thai, H’mong and Dao minority people. Explore Ban Lac of Thai people in Mai Chau located in a beautiful valley. Visit Thai women weaving cloth and making clothes. After lunch, trek to villages of White Thai People in Mai Chau. Enjoy dinner with a local family. After dinner, enjoy a Music Performance by White Thai People. Overnight in home stay in Ban Lac village. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner)

Day 4: Mai Chau - Hanoi

Wakes up to a peaceful morning in the mountainous area. You can walk around the village to experience more about the life of people here. Lunch is in a local house. After lunch, transfer back to Hanoi by road. Overnight in your hotel in Hanoi. (Breakfast and lunch)

Day 5: Hanoi - Ha Long Bay

After breakfast, transfer to Ha Long City by road. Embark on a Chinese Junk at Ha Long harbour. Savour fresh seafood as we cruise on the magnificent bay. Visit Sung Sot Cave. Dinner on board the boat. Overnight on the boat. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner)

Day 6: Ha Long Bay - Hanoi

After breakfast, cruise to Ha Long Harbour. Lunch is served on board. Upon arrival in Ha Long Harbour, disembark our boat and transfer to your hotel in Hanoi by road. Overnight in your hotel. (Breakfast and lunch)

Day 7: Airport

Transfer to Noi Bai airport by road for the flight back to your country. Trip concludes. (Breakfast)

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 – Hanoi arrival

Welcome to Hanoi, Vietnam’s bustling colonial capital. Our driver and guide of will meet you outside the baggage claim at Noi Bai Airport and take you to your hotel in the city center. In the afternoon, enjoy an orientation walk, visiting some of Hanoi’s main attractions: the opera house, Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple. In the evening, savor a welcome dinner of authentic Vietnamese food at one of Hanoi’s finest restaurants with your travel consultant of Laos Travel ( Hanoi Office).

Day 2 – Hanoi – Halong Bay Cruise

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel, then set out on a 3 to 4 hour drive to the UNESCO World Heritage site: Halong Bay. Spend 24 hours on a traditional Junk Cruise in the amazing bay: a natural wonderland composed of jutting limestone islands and sparkling turquoise waters. Arrive at the dock around noon and board your private junk. Savor a gourmet lunch of fresh seafood onboard as we sail out into the mystical bay. In the afternoon, cruise around some of Halong’s many islands, including Dinh Huong and Ga Choi. Along the way, visit one of the bay’s 3 largest caves (Thien Cung, Dau Go or Sung Sot). Stop at an island cove with a sheltered white-sand beach and take a dip in the warm waters of the East Sea (Bien Dong). Pass the night on your private junk, lulled to sleep by the gentle rocking of calm waters.

Day 3 – Halong Bay – Hanoi city tour

Awake early and participate in Tai Chi on the top deck or simply relax and watch the sunrise over the bay’s towering islands. Enjoy a morning cup of coffee or tea, before setting out to explore the nearby islands by rowboat. Return to the junk for brunch, then take advantage of the sundeck to admire the amazing rock formations of Bai Tu Long Bay as we navigate back to Halong City. Our driver will meet you at the dock and take you back to Hanoi. Enjoy a 3-hour Hanoi City landmark tour.

Day 4 – Hanoi Mai Chau – Trekking

Our driver and guide will meet you at your hotel and take you along highway 6 to Mai Chau: a small town nestled in the midst of a lush valley and surrounded by emerald-green rice fields. Enjoy picturesque views of the scenic landscape, sown with pagodas and rural villages. Stop along the way to visit the Muong tribe and then at Thung Khe Pass for a spectacular view of Mai Chau Valley. Have an authentic lunch with a local family of the White Thai Tribe and enjoy some free time to acquaint yourself with the villagers. In the afternoon, trek through terraced rice paddies and small villages, discovering the natural beauty of the valley and encountering the culture of the ethnic minority Thai people on our visits to the Pom Coong and Na Phon villages. Return to the home stay and help cook the evening meal.  This is an opportunity to learn about the local cuisine and culture as you join the family to prepare a traditional dinner. In the evening, enjoy a live dance and music performance. Stay overnight in the Long house.

Day 5 – Mai Chau – Dien Bien Phu

Start the day with a simple breakfast with your host family. Then take a short drive through the surrounding countryside, before setting off on a long and nice drive to the tea plantations and plateau of Moc Chau. We then travel from Son La, all the way to Dien Bien Phu on the newly upgraded highway No.6. This gorgeous stretch of road is lined with stunning scenery. We will make frequent photo stops en route and visit the minority villages of the H’mong and Black Thai peoples. Then  visiting a tea plantation on Moc Chau plateau—Vietnam’s premier tea-growing region.  In the afternoon we continue along winding mountain roads through North Vietnam’s stunning countryside. Drive pass the impressive Pha Din pass—a highlight of the day. Pha Din sits 1,000 meter or 3,280 feet above the sea level. According to local legend, “Pha Din” means the connection between Heaven and Earth. We arrive Dien Bien Phu later in the afternoon.
